Collector Tins

Twice a year The Pokémon Company International releases a tin collection. In the Fall of 2013, Team Plasma, the villains in the Black & White series, was released and featured one of three powerful Team Plasma Pokémon-EX characters as a special foil card. Typically this project is supported by a sales sheet and a retail display. As a proof of concept, an HTML email was designed to show a new and more effective way to drive excitement with distributors. A digital campaign, using web banners and targeting the hobby markets, was used to excite collectors about the upcoming release and help drive sales.

Problem

  • Artwork developed typically for an Eastern audience

  • No environments provided

  • Character’s energy (powers) is associated with a particular color

  • Develop cohesion of the character’s physical color and energy color

Process

In this design a six column grid was used to layout and position characters in a way that the front window would help to showcase the collector card and frame the illustrations. I also broke with convention and used soft lines rather than hard ones to suggest space. This allowed for the characters to rest within a more natural environment.
